We were contacted by Bridge City Bicycle Coop and asked if there were youth in the collective that would like to design and implement a mural at their location on 20th Street West. It was designed by FAM artist Toni Wuttunee (she/her), and 3 other artists in our collective supported her in implementing the mural. The prompt for the design was “Community”. Toni is a talented First Nations artist from Thunderchild First Nation and proud member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. A quote from Toni on the design: “I felt drawn to make a mural that had a meaning and purpose in the community. I wanted it to attract conversation and positive representation.”
Completed shortly before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the artwork speaks to the truths of the systemic oppression that underrepresented groups in our communities continue to face every day. We continue to feel the effects as descendents of the Indian Residential School System. We believe we need more positive representation in public spaces and that our voices and art can create change.
This project was funded by Bridge City Bicycle Coop and Canadian Roots Exchange.
